Ever wondered what to look for in a venue to achieve some great photos? Keep on reading to find out!

1. LIGHTING

Lighting is a photographers best friend. We look for nicely lit spaces. As most event photographers use an external flash, we look for ways to diffuse our light evenly. Having white/light coloured and even ceilings is a huge advantage for us and makes photographing a breeze. When choosing a venue, make sure you choose a venue with these characteristics.

2. SPACE

Space and lighting go hand in hand. Having a great amount of space to work with means that we get to use a longer focal length which results in nice bokeh, creamy images and nicely lit photos as the light is dispersed evenly. Plus, less distortion from wide angle lenses as we won’t be standing too close to the subject.

4. TIME

Allowing a decent amount of time, will result into carefully thought images. Not so much a venue tip, however booking your venue in for that little bit extra will allow you to breathe and not rush everything. This helps when you have a lot of photos that you want checked off the list. It also helps having a decent amount of bump in time for other suppliers and will ensure that your set up is perfect (if you choose to have one). It will also be an advantage for you as you can call your photographer in a little earlier and get some photos before your guests arrive. More time, less stress!

4. LOCATION

Choosing a space to host your event can be quite stressful. What is right for you? Outside or inside? If you decide to go with a location that is located outside, you may want to consider the weather, time of day and lighting.

Being in Melbourne, we are often gambling with the weather so make sure you choose a venue with a designated wet weather area, not forgetting tips 1, 2 and 3.

Time of day is also an important factor to keep in mind. Position of the sun is crucial as you would want to avoid harsh shadows, which brings us to lighting once again. As we would mostly use the natural light that is available to us, the position of the sun is important. This will change depending on the exact location of your event, so when choosing a venue, keep this in mind.

If your event is in winter, this is something that you wouldn't have to worry about too much, however as mentioned earlier Melbourne weather can be a bit of a gamble, so choose wisely.
